Attracting the Right Talent

, ,

Now is a great time for business! When the sun is shining and consumers venture out to frequent their favorite shops, many of us need to increase our staff to cover the higher demand.

But what do you do if the number of applicants you’re receiving isn’t as great as the number of openings you have?

Since unemployment is lower now than it has been in years, it’s increasingly more difficult to find the right candidates for your company.

There are a few things you can do to attract the right talent:

1) Increase wages

While it’s not feasible for everyone to up their pay scale, if you can manage to bump it up some, it will not only attract more applicants, but more experienced applicants.

2) Offer Benefits

Paid time off, health insurance, 401K plans, gym memberships, lunch on Fridays…

While some of these don’t seem like much, if you can offer just a little extra, you’re more likely to get a higher number of applications. If you are a small business and can’t offer health insurance, maybe try paying for annual flu shots for your employees. If you’re making the effort, your employees will notice.

3) Get Referrals

One of the best ways to get good candidates is to ask your friends, family and current employees if they know anyone who needs a job or wants to transition to something new. Even if you don’t get any immediate hits, someone might show up later when you’re hiring again. If you don’t ask, you won’t get an answer!

Lastly, if you need only temporary employees for a season, or want someone else to attract and hire talent while you run your business, Priority Staffing Group has years of experience placing individuals in both temporary jobs and in long-term careers.

We can give you a free consultation if you request a meeting from the location closest to you.

Employee PTO

,

Employee benefits often include some kind of paid time off. And every year, your employees will take advantage of cashing in that time and enjoying a few days away from work.

But, what if, like many other companies, your employees see the summer sunshine and all want to take off the same days. If you want to keep your employees happy, you need to make accommodations for their summer plans, but it’s just not feasible to close down your facility if you find yourself short-staffed.

So, how do you handle multiple requests? The following tips will help you find a solution.

1) Have a time frame for requests

Not having a time-off policy in place is the easiest way to find yourself in a bind. A good start is to set a time frame for requests – like a minimum of two weeks before. Some businesses may need more to find coverage for an absent employee. Evaluate your needs and make a reasonable rule you can hold your employees to.

2) Encourage time off during other seasons

Your employees won’t always request time off for spring, fall or holiday trips, but suggesting some time off when the business is slower (or when it seems your employee needs a break) may spark a trip idea. If you’re accommodating the whole year, you won’t have a flood of requests during the summer season only.

3) Cross-train

While each employee at your company likely has a specified role, it is good to have a backup person. If your office manager needs to take a vacation and no one else at the company knows how to turn off the alarm system or where to check the mail, those tasks can seriously hinder your operations. Make a point to have at least two people at your company who can perform all vital tasks.

4) First Come, First Served

At the end of the day, if the other suggestions don’t work, you need to have the rule to follow when multiple employees request off and you can’t run the business without them. Make it clear when someone is hired that requests will be approved if at all possible, but the first person to submit a request will be given priority.

Veteran Impact Celebration 2018

Veteran Impact Celebration 2018

,

Charlie and Hazel Daniel’s Veterans and Military Family Center, hosted at Middle Tennessee State University, held their inaugural Veteran Impact Celebration this year.

On Thursday, June 28th, Priority Staffing Group attended as a sponsor of the event held at The Grove at Williamson Place in Murfreesboro. This sponsorship helped us further solidify our relationship with this amazing organization as an Employment Partner.

Table

The event featured drinks, dinner and a night of entertainment for the corporate sponsors, who collectively raised over $41,000 for the center, and retired military officers, MTSU alumni, and other supporters. In total, including a $100,000 donation from Charlie and Hazel Daniels, the event raised $171,000.

MTSU’s Project Song was showcased first, which teamed up student songwriters with professional musicians to create songs that told stories, some even about student veterans who were in attendance at the event.

Charlie Daniels square

Scott Brown, of the Scooter Brown Band, played before the event concluded with a performance from Charlie Daniels himself, along with his band. They performed “In America” and “My Beautiful America.”

So why is this organization so important?

The Veterans and Military Family Center does more than just pat our veterans on the back for a job well done. And why there’s no reason not to thank our veterans for their service, actions really do speak louder than words. And that’s why this group of people on MTSU’s campus is so important. They DO.

Services offered include:

  • Transitioning Home – They help our veterans apply for the university, assist with financial aid and off-campus issues including family matters and finding affordable homes. They make sure our veterans are set up for success.

  • Employment – Believe it or not, it can be even more difficult for a veteran to find employment if all their experience is military. The center reaches out to employment partners (like Priority Staffing Group) to find available employment opportunities for veterans AND their family members. They also make phone calls to HR Managers to advocate for a veteran hire!

  • Counseling – This includes professional career counseling, transition counseling, financial counseling and assistance with tutoring.

Above all other services, the center provides support in the form of a lending hand and a listening ear. They listen to the problems our veterans are having and don’t say no if it’s in their power to help.

Priority Staffing Group is proud to be a supporter of America’s veterans and the Charlie and Hazel Daniels Veterans and Military Family Center.

RecruitCon 2018.

RecruitCon 2018

,

On May 10 – 11, Priority Staffing Group sent representatives from each of our offices to attend RecruitCon 2018. This conference was designed to teach groundbreaking strategies for staffing and recruiting.

Our goal is to learn as much as we can throughout the year to better service our clients. Part of this year’s conference focus was marketing to the newer generations of candidates, including Millennials, who now make up a large part of the working population, and Generation Z, who are just breaking into the workforce. In fact, 50% of the world’s current population is under 31 years old, which makes these two generations more important than ever to focus on in terms of employment.

By collecting the information needed to effectively hire and train these generations, we are able to take one step ahead of other companies who are hiring.

Three important takeaways:

1) Keep hiring simple

2) Growth opportunities are a must

3) Flexibility is key

We pride ourselves on keeping up with the newest Human Resources trends to better service our clients. If you want more information on how we can help your business, reach out to any of our locations.

3 Ways to Wow Your Recruiter

3 WAYS TO WOW YOUR RECRUITER

,

This is going to be one of those honest moments for job seekers who ask “Why haven’t I found a job yet?”

Interviewing for an open job, even at a staffing company, does not guarantee you’ll get hired.

I know it seems like because we place people in jobs for a living that you should get one just for walking in the door. But we have hundreds of applicants sometimes for each open position and when we call you in for an interview, that’s exactly what you have to do – interview.

Your odds can even be better at a staffing agency if you approach the interview correctly. Read why we can help you have Better Odds.

New Call-to-action

Our tip: treat every interaction with a staffing agency like you would with a direct hire employer.

We would love to give every applicant a position, but our overall goals are to find career placements, meaning we find long-term positions that our candidates want to work at. If we just throw people into the first open position we have, no one would be happy.

So, when you go to an interview, start with these three easy tips to wow a recruiter!

1. Dress the Part

The biggest mistake we see made at interviews is not dressing the part. Whatever position you’re interviewing for, dress one step up.

That’s not to say you can’t wear jeans for a cleaning position, but you should wear a button up shirt or blouse and the jeans should be clean, hole free and well-fitting. Office positions should always be business casual.

Read more about what to wear for your interview below:

Interview Attire

2. Be Respectful

Respect has many different aspects. First and foremost, show up to your interview and be on time. If something comes up that causes you to be late or miss the interview, be respectful enough to call and let the recruiter’s office know as soon as you can.

Respect extends into the interview as well. Unless you have an emergency, there’s no reason to have your phone out during the interview. Best practice: turn it on silent and put it away.

3. Prepare

A frustration for many recruiters is asking any question in the interview process and getting the answer “I don’t know.” To avoid answering that way, prepare for your interview ahead of time. First, bring an updated resume. Make sure all dates of employment are correct and expect to answer questions about the job you did there. It wouldn’t hurt to have bullet points on your resume for each position.

Also, prepare to answer questions about WHY you want to do that job and know a few things about the company you’re interviewing for. It shows interest in the job and that alone can signal to a recruiter you might be the best fit.

If you need help creating or updating your resume, read our post on Resume Writing.

5K Walk for Autism & ADHD

,

April is National Autism Awareness Month and we’re participating in an Autism & ADHD Walk to raise awareness.

Because early diagnosis and treatment are so critical in dealing with these conditions, General Cable elected to work with the Tri-County Special Education (TCSE) school in DuQuoin, Illinois to help purchase much needed sensory equipment. The school provides K-12 education for children from Perry, Jackson and Union Counties.

Priority Staffing Group has sponsored the 5K Walk for Autism & ADHD. The charity event will be held April 14, 2018 at the Southtowne Shopping Center in DuQuoin from 8:30am until noon.

We’ve also encouraged our employees to walk on April 14th. Celesta Bowers, Priority Staffing Group’s Finance Manager, said she is participating because “it is very important to educate others and show support to other families that have children with special needs.”

The goal of the walk is to raise awareness and facilitate better understanding of the needs children with these disorders have. All proceeds that are raised from this event will benefit TCSE to purchase special stools, desks and sensory equipment that is helpful to the education of children with Autism and ADHD.

We Do Care

,

Staffing Agency, group photo

We get it. We know why you shy away from using a staffing agency when you’re job searching. You don’t want to just be another body in a warehouse. Well, Priority Staffing Group is different for one simple reason: We care.

It’s easy to take everyone who comes in for a job and throw them into the first open position we have. But we don’t do things the easy way; we do things the right way. Three things happen in our office that you won’t see other agencies do.

1) We Ask

When you come in for an interview with Priority Staffing, we ask a series of questions that don’t just determine if you are able to do a job, but determine if you will enjoy the job. Our belief here is that no one should get stuck doing a job they hate. Life is too short for that and we want to see people both successful AND happy. Taking the extra time to ask you the right questions helps us figure out what your next steps will be.

2) We Listen

After asking our interview questions, we don’t just tell you what job we want to put you in. We listen to your feedback and hear your concerns. If you say “I hated my last job because it was too dirty,” then we are not going to put you in a cleaning job that we know you won’t like. We take the time to listen and understand you so that you’ll have a placement that you enjoy.

3) We Care

Above all else, our Recruiters and Account Managers at Priority Staffing Group genuinely care about our applicants. Many of us came to this company with a desire to help people and make a difference. Having that passion for people is what makes us different. Priority Staffing Group hires our internal staff with the same patience and thoughtfulness we use to hire for our clients’ positions. We hire people who match our company culture and fit in with our values.

Everyone at our staffing agency is out to make your success our priority.

If you’re a job seeker ready to make the leap, call any of our office locations so we can get you on the way to the career you want.

Applicant Coaching

Applicant Coaching & Success

,

This year we have had things that seem a little off, especially with the weather. Single digit temperatures, lots of rain, and that groundhog… I know I am so ready for springtime and the time change, causing longer days.

Now, as far as business goes, things have taken off out of the new year gate! Companies need staff and we are working hard a Priority Staffing Group, Ltd. to work though the qualified applicants.
However, one thing that keeps happening: applicants do not seem to have the desire to clean up and dress for success. Please, if you know anyone looking for work, remind them that they need to present themselves in a clean and neat manner. First impressions still make a difference. We only get one chance to give a first impression.

It is important to educated people and remind them what it takes to get an opportunity for employment. Employment is not guaranteed to anyone. You must work to be selected and then work to prove you are the best fit for the position.

Let’s work together to educate our applicants. It only takes a minute to give advice on something that can set someone closer to the top of the applicant ladder.

Priority Staffing Group has locations in Marion, Illinois; Vandalia, Illinois; and Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Please check out our job board that is updated daily to submit an application.
